Window of time

By CHRIS MILLSPAUGH

Every once in a great while, you get an opportunity to take some time off and reflect upon how your life is going. You can review the past and recall the events that got you to this particular moment. And, you may project ahead to imagine just where you'd prefer to end up. I like to call it my "window of time" because the window looks both ways—behind and ahead. Mine was last week when I was fortunate enough to have been able to take five days off in a row before the busy summer season kicked into high gear. I tried to make the most of it.

I've been told not to look back simply because it's the past and you can't do anything about it now. I've been told not to look ahead and have expectations because to do so would surely end in disappointment. They say you should just live in the moment—in the now. But we earthly people have to deal with life day-in and day-out. We should treasure our past to see how we dealt with life before and steer away and learn from those mistakes that we made. We should have some expectations because without hope, it becomes a rather dull, frustrating world.

I enjoy life. I really do. I've got a wonderful family, an abundance of friends, a good job and, for now, I'm in good health. Plus, I get to talk to you folks each week and hear your comments. But, I see so many folks who are not enjoying life. They are sad, defeated, lost and have become their own worst enemy.

These are really tough times and negativism can become deadly. If you don't grab a hold of positive thought, the world can beat you down. This is a particularly wonderful place that we live in and yet this area has suffered some devastating losses this year when some of our fellow citizens gave up and exercised the final option.

Perhaps we should all set aside our personal "window of time" and think of all the good we have in our lives. There's nothing wrong with hope. It keeps us all going.

Nice talking to you.
