TCS boys repeat as state tennis kings

No golds, no silvers, but team is a winner

First-day adversity and split set thrillers didn't stop The Community School boys' tennis team from successfully defending its State 3A team championship Saturday in Caldwell.

Coach Phil Huss' Cutthroat boys won the Sun Valley independent school's seventh State 3A tennis title and second in a row by a 47-41 margin over Parma's Panthers. Homedale (24) was a distant third.

They didn't win an individual gold medal or silver in the two-day meet, but three victories in the consolation championships put the Cutthroats over the top in the boys' team totals.

With doubles powerhouse Parma (81 points doubles) lurking and trying to take the gold away from the Cutthroats, clutch victories by seniors Paul Davis-Wyatt Bunce and sophomore Will Brokaw-senior Ricki Eshman were pivotal.

Huss said, "Every match counted but these, in particular, were key to securing the boys' title."

Davis and Bunce, Sun Valley's #2 boys' doubles team, won third place 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 over Parma's Landon Smyser and Chance Velie. Huss said, "In a hard-fought, scrappy, knees-bloodied third set, Wyatt and Paul kept pressuring the net after good, deep approach shots and they were able to prevail."

Brokaw and Eshman played together for the first time just 10 days ago, but they won five of their six matches at state including a dramatic 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (2) split-set nailbiter over Parma's Samuel Knickerbocker and Melanie Loya.

Huss said, "Any match against Parma is important because it prevents our rival from earning any more points in the tournament."

And Parma with its 14 state qualifiers earned plenty of points, 106 of them overall including a 65-30 margin in the final girls' team totals that secured the 12th Panther state tennis championship. In contrast, The Community School ended with 66 combined points.

The Cutthroats did have a 23-0 edge over Parma in boys' singles thanks mainly to sophomores Hunter Weaver and Tim Kanellitsas, who played each other in the third-place match. But Parma was too tough overall with its two gold medals and two silvers.

"It was another Community School and Parma showdown, but we had a disappointing start where all our players were knocked out of the main draw by 3:30 p.m. Friday," said Huss. "We battled back in boys' singles and doubles, and mixed doubles to solidify another state title for our boys' team."
