1st Celtic Faire set for June 5-6

Men in kilts throwing heavy objects will be only one part of the inaugural Sun Valley Celtic Faire & Heavy Events, which will take place Friday, June 5, and Saturday, June 6, at the Festival Meadows in Sun Valley.

The weekend of events will include a Youth Challenge on Saturday for three age brackets, 8-10, 11-13 and 14-16. All entrants will receive a commemorative T-shirt and medals will be awarded for first, second, and third place as well as best overall score.

The Scottish American Athletic Association Idaho athletes competing on Sunday will be on hand to train the youths and to oversee and judge the competitions. Registration opens at 1:30 p.m. The fee to compete is $10 and the $5 entrance fee to Saturday's event will be waived. Competition will begin at 2:30 p.m.

The Youth Challenge will include an obstacle course, weight for height, weight for distance, Scottish hammer, stone put, foot race, tug-o-war and caber turn. In addition, the band Guess When will perform on the Main Stage starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and Irish Dance Idaho will give several performances throughout the day.

The weekend will also include an adult Test Your Strength competition with throwing of the weights, putting the stone, hammer throwing, caber toss, sheaf toss and weight over bar. Seven divisions of athletes will compete from novice to expert and all are welcome. Judges for the novice division will be on hand to teach and instruct those who might not have competed before.

Registration fee is $15 for athletes and the spectator entry fee will be waived for all competitors. Pre-registration can be completed at saaaidaho.org or day-of registration starts at 8:30 a.m. at Festival Meadows on Sun Valley Road. For details, call 725-2105.
