Ice rink makes sense

Greetings from Salmon, Idaho, home of a very busy seasonal ice rink. The city of Hailey has a bond election on May 25 to help build the Hailey Rodeo Park, a complex with an event arena expanded skate park and a covered ice facility. I would like to offer my encouragement to the citizens of Hailey to go out and vote in favor of this bond.

An ice rink will bring the joy of skating and hockey to the children and their families in the Hailey area. We have found that a quality ice facility, providing safe recreational skating and an instructional and competitive hockey program, helps make our motto, "A kid on ice is a kid out of hot water" a reality.

Additionally, the Salmon Ice Rink and tournaments provide a serious economic boost for our businesses in an otherwise quiet time of the year. From December through February, virtually every weekend is scheduled with hockey tournaments and games.

In 2009-2010, Salmon Hockey estimates that approximately 1,200 out-of-town players, parents and spectators spent over $120,000 in direct expenditures. Without an ice facility, these dollars would not find their way to our community. If every dollar spent is turned over three times, it is easy to see how a small property tax increase can open the door to a great opportunity to enhance not only your local economy but the well-being of your community's youth.

I urge you to vote yes on May 25!
