Lickley stays atop the rodeo circuit at Carey

At Blaine County Fairgrounds last weekend

Barrel racing and girls' cow cutting continue to be Haillie Taylor's strengths on the 5th District High School rodeo circuit this spring.

No one seems likely to put a stop to the Lickley Express.

Wood River High sophomore Taylor won the first go-round of barrel racing Friday night with a 10-point ride of 16.826 seconds at Blaine County Fairgrounds in Carey on the first night of the Carey circuit stop.

Saturday, Taylor had another strong performance with a 16.844-second dash around the barrels but she settled for second place behind this season's barrel racing leader, Samantha Logan of Jerome.

Logan has 75 points after four rodeos and Taylor is second with 58.

In girls' cutting, Taylor is the season leader with 70.5 points, ahead of Jessica Lancaster of Jerome (69.5) and Katie Sparks of Jerome (68). Taylor had 71-point and 70-point rides at Carey for second place outright Friday and a tie for second in Saturday's go-round.

Jerome's Valene Lickley is a virtual lock to succeed Taylor as all-around season winner. Lickley is tough across the board with 240 points—49 barrels, 57 breakaway, 55 goats, 27 pole bending and 52 team roping. In second place is King Hill's Darby Fox with 214.

Gooding's Mackenzie Stevens (185) knocked Taylor (178) out of third place at Carey with 18-point efforts in goats and pole bending.

Also at Carey last weekend, Wood River High freshmen team ropers Jared Anderson and Eli McNees placed fifth in the first go-round at 28.380 seconds for six all-around points each; and Carey's Danielle Hennefer earned pole bending points with 24.856 and 25.330 rides.

District competition wraps up the spring season May 28-29 at Gooding. That's the final event before the state rodeo June 13-20 in Pocatello.
