Fourteen Wood River High School tennis players are headed to the State 4A tennis tournament next weekend in Boise after dominating this week's Great Basin Conference 4A tournament at Sun Valley.

New GBC champions are junior Ellen Davis and sophomore Karl Wilander in singles, senior Lauren Reutter and freshman Margaret Reutter in girls' doubles, and senior Morgan Pike and junior Jessica Hamilton in mixed doubles.

In all, 14 of the 16 Wood River players entered in the conference championships qualified for the State 4A tourney May 21-22 in Boise. That's the highest number of Wolverine state qualifiers since 2001.

Wood River (34-8 match record in the tourney) won four of the five categories at Sun Valley Tennis Club Wednesday and finished the two-day, six-school tournament with 145 combined points, far outdistancing runner-up Twin Falls (78) and third-place Burley (50).

Securing their third consecutive GBC team title were the Wood River girls (72 points) over Twin Falls. The Wolverine boys (73 points) captured their first-ever GBC championship in the six years that Hailey has competed at the Idaho 4A level.

Fifth-year Wood River head coach Vicki Johnston said, "All in all, I couldn't be a prouder coach. We had expectations of doing well, but everybody came in and raised their game."

In boys' singles, Wilander lost only five games in three straight-set wins and Davis was almost as dominant in girls' singles with three straight-set victories. Davis had shared the girls' doubles conference title with Jessica Hamilton last year and they placed second at state.

Hamilton teamed with last year's GBC boys' singles' bronze medalist Morgan Pike in mixed doubles this year. They claimed three straight-set victories on the Sun Valley courts and, like Wilander, dropped only five games.

Lauren Reutter and Margaret Reutter, rarely challenged in the league season, cruised along at the tournament in girls' doubles and won a second-set tiebreaker 8-6 to nail down the crown. In boys' doubles, seniors Brendan Freund and RJ Forgeon were second.

Johnston said, "Brendan and RJ played some of their best tennis ever at the tournament." They emerged as the only Hailey second-place finishers of the conference finals.

Third places went to sophomore Sloan Storey in girls' singles, junior Will Eagan and sophomore Hannah Baybutt in mixed doubles, and sophomores Raleigh Grossbaum and Charlie Grabow in boys' doubles. Senior Jordan Niedrich was fourth in boys' singles.

Ten of the 14 Wolverine state qualifiers (5 seniors, 3 juniors, 5 sophs, 1 freshmen) also competed at state last year. Next weekend, Wood River will visit state tennis for the 35th time and will try to win a state team title for the first time since 1988. No Hailey singles player has won at state since 1990.
