Briefs

Slate Creek bridge construction begins

Construction of a new Slate Creek bridge across the Salmon River east of Stanley began Monday. Traffic will be able to use the existing bridge during construction, but recreational boaters may be affected with closures and delays. Boaters will be notified of closures and delays at launch sites.

Located about 24 miles east of Stanley, the new bridge will be built next to the existing bridge. Two construction seasons will be required to complete the $4.9 million project.

The existing 314-foot bridge, built in 1934, is showing signs of deterioration.

Police decline to release name

The Sun Valley Police Department has determined it will not release the name of a 57-year-old Sun Valley man who they say shot himself in the chest on May 1 with a 9mm handgun.

The Idaho Mountain Express last week filed a formal records request with Police Chief Cameron Daggett after the department declined to release the man's name. In its denial, the department cited a provision in Idaho Code that allows information to be withheld in cases in which an investigation is ongoing.

The incident occurred at the Atelier Condominiums in Sun Valley Village. After the man called 911, police went to his residence. Police said the man discharged his gun as they were talking to him through a partially open door. After they heard a gunshot, they found the man on the floor, they said.

The man was brought to St. Luke's Wood River Medical Center south of Ketchum and then to St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise.

Learn to protect property from fire

The Institute for Business & Home Safety has announced the availability of new guidelines to protect property from the ravages of wildfire.

The information pertains to homes and businesses, including farms and ranches, and is available in electronic form and printed brochures. The printed series comprises three property-specific brochures relating to residential, commercial and agricultural properties.

The guidelines are based on information from professional fire services and wildfire research, and address three key areas: structures, landscaping nearby and general vegetation in the larger area. According to the institute, each of these sources can be dealt with through maintenance, material and design improvements, and vegetation control.

The guidelines are publicly available in PDF format at www.DisasterSafety.org/wildfire. For more information, contact the institute at (813) 286-3400 or info@ibhs.org.

Chamber promotes mountain biking

The Sun Valley-Ketchum Chamber & Visitors Bureau is expanding promotion of Sun Valley as a biking destination.

The effort includes working with local mountain bike enthusiasts on new promotions and a new event—the Sun Valley Rhythm & Ride bike and music festival, which will take place throughout the Wood River Valley from June 24-27.

The chamber is also helping to promote Olympic gold medalist Kristin Armstrong's Cycle Academy Camp, which will be launching in Sun Valley from May 28-30.

Another of the chamber's new efforts involves working with local elite mountain bike athlete Rebecca Rusch. The Ride with Rusch Sun Valley Mountain Bike Trip sweepstakes, being promoted nationally, provides the winner with a bike vacation in Sun Valley and an opportunity to explore the local trails with a local expert, Rusch. The sweepstakes drawing will be held Sunday, June 27, as part of the Rhythm & Ride event.

The chamber marketing team helped Rusch organize and promote the premiere of the Race Across the Sky movie on Feb. 25 at the Sun Valley Resort Opera House. The movie documents the 2009 Leadville 100 mountain bike race and profiles race winners Rusch and Lance Armstrong.
