Rain suspends WRHS-Jerome baseball

Downpours of rain in the Magic Valley south of Shoshone resulted in the suspension of Monday's Great Basin Conference prep baseball tournament game between Wood River and host Jerome. It was rescheduled for today, Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Jerome.

Third-seeded Jerome (14-15) led Monday's game 5-1 in the bottom of the second inning when the downpour ended things for the day. Wood River scored its run in the first inning on a Zach Israel single and an RBI triple by outfielder Alex Padilla.

Junior righty Jake Freeman started on the hill for coach Matt Nelson's #5-seeded Wolverines (7-17), who had dropped into the loser bracket of the six-school double elimination tourney with a 14-3 five-inning loss to top-seeded Twin Falls (24-4) Thursday in Twin Falls.

The winner of today's scheduled Wood River-Jerome suspended game will travel to Rupert for a 5 p.m. loser-out game against the #2-seeded Minico Spartans (20-10) Thursday, May 13. Twin Falls beat Minico 8-1 Saturday.

Championship game was pushed back a day to Friday, May 14. Two GBC teams qualify for the State 4A meet May 20-22 in Nampa.
