Taylor makes up ground as Carey rodeo arrives

At Blaine County Fairgrounds this weekend

Wood River High sophomore Haillie Taylor made some inroads into the Fifth District Rodeo all-around girls' standings last weekend at Shoshone and is looking forward to a positive effort May 7-8 when the circuit comes to Carey.

Taylor pulled together 54 points with strong performances in barrel racing, goat tying and pole bending and moved up from fifth place in the overall standings to third place. But she's still stuck in neutral in breakaway roping and may have dug too deep a hole to catch the leaders.

Jerome's Valene Lickley is tough across the board with 180 points—38 barrels, 47 breakaway, 41 goats, 20 pole bending and 34 team roping. In second is King Hill's Darby Fox with 165, and reigning Fifth District all-around girls' champ Taylor has moved up with 136 points.

At Shoshone, Taylor won Friday's barrel racing with a 17.590-second ride and finished second to Fox in goat tying at 9.420. The Hailey soph was also second in pole bending at 21.679 on Friday night.

On Saturday, Taylor was fourth in barrels, sixth in breakaway, fifth in goats and third in pole bending. Carey's Taylor Castle clocked a fifth-place pole bending time Saturday.

Wood River High's Rodeo Team boasted another solid result in team roping by newcomers Jared Anderson and Eli McNees. The Hailey freshmen placed third in the second go-round at 17.920 seconds for eight all-around points each.

District competition is May 28-29 at Gooding—but first, the cowpokes and cowgirls come to Blaine County Fairgrounds in Carey Friday, May 14 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, May 15 at 5 p.m. for the Senior Home Rodeo.

The final Fifth District cow cutting was scheduled for Tuesday, May 11 at the Shu-Fly, Gooding. In the cutting at Shoshone, Taylor had second-place scores of 70 points to pick up 18 points in the cutting race.
