Sports summary


Putting course opens,
in time for Mother's Day

Sun Valley Resort's White Clouds Golf Course and the 18-hole Sawtooths Putting Course will open Friday, May 7.

Now Sun Valley golfers will have the choice of playing the front nine on the Trail Creek Golf Course and/or nine on the White Clouds.

Green fees will be $75 for 18 holes and $5 for adults and $3 for youngsters playing the Sawtooths. However, in celebration of Mother's Day weekend, fees for the Sawtooths will be waived for all.

To arrange a tee time please call the Sun Valley Club Pro Shop, 208-622-2251. Season golf passes are still available.

Olympic Celebration
for Arritola is Monday at TCS

Community School Head of School Andy Jones-Wilkins will host a special Olympic Celebration for 2010 U.S. Olympian Morgan Arritola on Monday, May 10 at 9:30 a.m. in The Community School gym, Sun Valley. There will be an unveiling of Arritola's name on the Cutthroat Olympic banner in The Fish Tank. Also, Arritola and her coach Rick Kapala of the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation's Junior Nordic ski team will say a few words, as will Jones-Wilkins. Arritola is a 2004 Community School graduate.

Atkinson Park Summer
Youth Program registration

Friday, May 7 is the big day when registration will be accepted for the first time for the 2010 Atkinson Park Summer Youth program. It starts at 8 a.m. Check the Rec Center for all details, or visit ketchumidaho.org.

Ketchum Coed Softball Meeting

The 2010 organizational meeting of the Ketchum Coed Softball League is Wednesday, May 12 at 5 p.m. at the Atkinson Park Recreation Center, Ketchum. Please have a team representative attend. The slow-pitch softball league generally meets each Wednesday night for games at Atkinson Park, in June and July.

Youth Football Fair is May 12

Register for the Wood River Optimist youth football program Wednesday, May 12 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Wood River Middle School in Hailey. Be prepared to enjoy a free sloppy joe/hot dog dinner and visit with coaches in their booths. They will sign you up for the fall program and answer all your questions. Bring a copy of a birth certificate, insurance card and payment.

This year's fees are $60 for flag football ages 7-8, and $140 for tackle football ages 9-12. Cost for cheerleaders ages 8-12 is $75. Scholarships are available. If you can't attend, be sure to mail in your registration forms before the fair. The season runs from Aug. 9-Oct. 16, with games nearly every Saturday from Aug. 28-Oct. 16. And don't forget the upcoming spring Wood River Youth Football camps, both at the high school. Kids in grades 1-6 gather May 17-20 from 4-5:30 p.m. and those in grades 7-8 meet May 19-21 from 5:30-7 p.m. Cost is $40. Call Kevin Stilling at 578-5020 ext. 2295 or email kstilling@blaineschools.org.

Snowboarder headed to Mammoth

Mal Prior of the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation Snowboard Team has been invited to take part in the U.S. Snowboarding Project Gold Camp at Mammoth, Ca. May 27-June 2. Prior capped off an impressive winter season with a fifth place at the USASA Nationals gaining the attention of U.S. Snowboarding coach Bud Keene. Mal will be training alongside some of the best young riders in the country. His selection marks the 10th year that the Sun Valley Snowboard Team has had a rider invited to this camp going back to Kelsey Bunce in 2000. SVSEF snowboard Coach Jacob Tyler is being considered as a guest coach for this camp as well.

Carey Fun Run 5k May 15

Planning is underway for the second annual Carey Fun Run 5-kilometer Saturday, May 15 at 8 a.m. from the Carey Municipal Airport. The event raises money for the Carey Rural Fire Department. Entry is $15 including t-shirt before May 8 and $20 afterward (no guarantee t-shirt). There will also be a pancake breakfast starting at 7 a.m. ($5, $20 family).

Aquafina Pitch, Hit and Run May 15

The Official Skills Competition of Major League Baseball is scheduled for Saturday, May 15 from 2-4 p.m. at Nelson Field in Hailey. The free program offered through the Blaine County Recreation District is open to girls and boys ages 7-14. All participants must bring a copy of their birth certificate, and fill out a registration/waiver form prior to the start of competition.
