A 57-year-old Sun Valley man was in critical condition Tuesday at a Boise hospital from a gunshot wound that police said was self-inflicted Saturday afternoon at the man's home.
Sun Valley police declined requests to identify the man. Police Chief Cam Daggett said he would confer with the department's attorney to determine whether he is obligated to release the name. The Idaho Mountain Express has filed a public records request to obtain the name.
The man was initially transported by Ketchum Fire Department ambulance to St. Luke's Wood River Medical Center and was flown from there by emergency helicopter to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise.
Sun Valley Assistant Police Chief Mike Crawford said police became involved when the man called the Blaine County emergency dispatch center at 3:52 p.m. Saturday.
"He actually called 911 and said that he was going to shoot himself," Crawford said.
Crawford said Sun Valley and Ketchum police officers immediately went to the man's residence at the Atelier Condominiums in Sun Valley Village. He said the door to the second-story condo was partially open and that the officers "called out to him and he told them he had a gun."
"They pleaded with him to come to the door, but he wouldn't and a few moments later they heard a pop," Crawford said. "They then cautiously entered and found the victim on the floor."
Crawford said police administered first aid until the ambulance arrived.
He said the weapon was a 9mm semi-automatic handgun.
