Celebrate Cinco de Mayo

The College of Southern Idaho and La Alianza will host a Cinco de Mayo celebration on Wednesday, May 5, at the Community Campus in Hailey. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. in Room 301.

Attendees are asked to bring a potluck dish.

"Get together with other students of Spanish and students of English for a friendly hour of conversion," states a press release from La Alianza. "For half the time, everyone will speak Spanish; for the other half, everyone will speak English."

NAMI hosts suicide prevention panel

On Thursday, May 6, the National Alliance on Mental Illness will host a panel discussion on "Suicide. Let's Stop the Devastation."

The public is invited to attend the event from 6-8 p.m. at the Wood River High School Distance Learning Center.

Panelists will include representatives of Crisis Hotline, the Blaine County Sheriff's Office, the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and the Blaine County Drug Coalition.

CFL bulb disposal Bellevue style

Bellevue City Council Chair Chris Koch found an inexpensive way to provide a CFL bulb disposal program at City Hall this week—a five-gallon paint bucket with a plastic bag liner.

"We are not spending any citizens' money on this program," said Koch, who will bring the discarded, mercury-laden bulbs to Home Depot in Twin Falls for safe disposal when the bucket fills.

Koch said the buckets cost $3 each and will hold about 100 bulbs. A similar CFL bucket program is offered by the Environmental Resource Center in Ketchum and at City Hall in Hailey.

Those buckets cost $100 each and are wrapped in cardboard before being sent away for safe disposal at an EPA approved site.

Fur Ball raises $10,800

The first Fur Ball, held April 2, raised about $10,800 to benefit the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley.

Steve Miller and The Accelerators provided the music. Sponsors included D. L. Evans Bank, Thunderpaws Pet Shoppe, Hailey Coffee Co., Sun Valley Brokers, KECH/KSKI and Yo Mamma Productions. The winner of a $300 prize for guessing the number of dog cookies in a jar, who asked to remain anonymous, donated his prize back to the shelter.

"The proceeds will support taking care of 45 dogs, our typical daily number, for three months." said event chair Sheila Liermann.

Marketing committee to give first report

The Ketchum and Sun Valley city councils will hold a joint meeting Monday at 8 p.m. in Ketchum City Hall to hear from the Marketing Exploration Committee.

Sun Valley City Councilman Bob Youngman created the three-person committee—excluding himself—in early March following his well-received presentation on the resort area's faltering economy. He used Ketchum's and Sun Valley's low local-option tax numbers to show that the area needs to re-evaluate its approach toward attracting tourists.

The committee's purpose is to seek a professional marketing firm that the two cities would then hire.

On Monday, the committee will be giving its first report of its progress.
