Ketchum's Planning and Zoning Commission held its second workshop meeting on Monday to discuss a new ordinance that would clarify the rules for all signs in town.
A sign ordinance is already in place, but City Planning Manager Stefanie Leif said it's unclear for businesses and is unenforceable for the city.
A replacement ordinance was written by the P&Z in 2006 and revised in 2007, but was never adopted by the City Council. The P&Z could now review and revise that draft, or a new code could be written by choosing items from the codes of similar cities.
Commissioner Rich Fabiano said Ketchum's draft code is "too lengthy" at 26 pages, and needs to be 10-12 pages. The P&Z didn't make any decisions on Monday, but agreed to have a draft code before the City Council for approval sometime in July.
"We need to keep this fairly simple," Fabiano said. "If it's simple, it's easier to enforce."
The P&Z will take up sections of the draft ordinance one by one at its next meeting on May 10. Commissioners said they will take into consideration the concerns of local businesses that would be most affected. A public hearing is preliminarily planned for May 24 to gather opinions.
"This is the aesthetic of the city we're trying to maintain," said Commissioner Sam Williams.
