Scott R. Nicholson

A Ketchum man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for felony possession of methamphetamine and for being a "persistent violator" of the law.

Sentencing for 33-year-old Scott R. Nicholson was pronounced on April 20 by Judge John K. Butler in Blaine County 5th District Court. Nicholson is required to spend five years behind bars before parole eligibility. He was given credit for 501 days already spent in jail.

The case against Nicholson dates back to May 2008 when he was arrested in a methamphetamine bust in Bellevue. He was also charged with being a persistent violator, a sentence enhancement punishable by up to life in prison, because of his past criminal record. The persistent violator charge can be applied if a person has two prior felony convictions. According to the Blaine County Prosecuting Attorney's Office, Nicholson has four felony convictions in Blaine County.

He was originally given an 18-year suspended prison sentence, but was given a chance at rehabilitation for 180 days at the North Idaho Correctional Facility in Cottonwood, followed by probation.

Nicholson was arrested again in February on a charge of misdemeanor possession of marijuana and his original prison sentence was imposed.
