Icebreaker golf raises nearly $4,000

Ketchum's Doug D'Andrea has been organizing the Camp Rainbow Gold fundraising golf tournament called "Icebreaker" for five years—and the tournament marked its best day ever on Saturday, April 24.

"The event raised $3,910 for the kids," said D'Andrea. "That's the best we've done in the five years I've been organizing it. Over those five years we have raised $20,102 for Camp Rainbow Gold."

Over 100 golfers gathered Saturday at the 93 Golf Ranch near Jerome to break out the clubs and raise money for the oncology camp located near Ketchum. Run by the American Cancer Society, the camp is for children who have been, or are being treated for cancer.

In a tightly contested battle, the defending champions John Whisler, Mike Pryzinski, Kevin Cincotta and Tim McDermott held on to their title. They defeated Shawn Aicher, Lonnie Lindquist, Tom Ferries and Mike Connelly.

With both teams carding 10-under-par, a scorecard playoff was used to settle the winner.

The women's division went to Kelly Cole, Kristy Pigeon, Kelly Lynch and Elisa Tobia.

Barrymore at Whistler pipe

Last week SVSEF Freestyle team member Tai Barrymore, 17, along with coach Ben Verge traveled to Whistler, B.C., Canada to compete in the World Superpipe Invitational, part of the Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival. The pro level event attracted riders from all over the world going for the $15,000 first-place prize.

Competing for the first time at such a high level, Barrymore made his presence known. He dominated the qualifying round of newcomers winning by more than five points over the second-place competitor. He placed fourth in the semifinals. In the finals, Barrymore threw down a solid first run for 13th place. Not holding back on his final run, Tai went for it all on his first hit attempting a "double cork 1260" (two flips with 3 1/2 rotations) on his first hit. "He brought it around to his feet but slid out on his hip", said Verge. "Tai drew the loudest cheer from the crowd each day with his massive first hit, getting over 20 feet out of the pipe." He finished 15th.

Freestyle program director Andy Ware said, "These events are the future for Tai. He is already displaying a competitive maturity that other guys never reach. He has some time off now and then we will begin summer training and preparing for the Junior World Championships and the New Zealand Open in August."
