By 20 points, Carey boys capture weekly track meet

Pirates sprint to girls’ title in Panther Invite

When Thursday's weekly Carey Invitational track and field meet was rained out, the schools regrouped and returned to the Derrick Parke Memorial Field track last Friday—where the Carey boys sprinted to the team title over Camas County.

Senior Dillon Simpson won the 200-meter dash and 800m run while junior Jacy Baird took the 100m for Carey, which had 40 points in sprints and 34 in relays. That was the big difference between first-place Carey (162 points) and Camas (142.5).

Joe Laidlaw (300m intermediate hurdles), Brad Peck (shotput) and Blair Peck (discus) were Carey's other individual winners, and the Panthers won the 4x400m and medley relays to account for their eight gold medals out of the 17 events.

Camas County gained its five golds from distance runner Bryan John (1600m, 3200m), Derek Walker (long jump, triple jump) and Andrew Simon (high jump).

Points in the short sprints and relays were also decisive for the visiting Butte County Pirates from Arco in the girls' eight-school race. Butte County amassed 51 in sprints and 36 relays to outscore second-place Carey Panthers by a 153-120 margin.

Carey's points were very balanced topped by individual winners Micaela Adamson (triple jump) and Jessica Parke (high jump). Butte County piled up 10 gold medals—Jessica Dixon taking the 100m and 200m and Brigette Pope both hurdles races.

The Mushers were missing soph Katelyn Peterson for the day and gave up points in sprints, hurdles, field and relays, but third-place Camas (73) nevertheless got three second places by senior Erica Phantharasen. Richfield soph Sasha Kent swept the 800m, 1600m and 3200m.

Carey senior Taylor Whitby enjoyed a good day with second places in the 200m dash and 800m run, plus a berth on the winning Panther medley relay team that just out-legged Butte County by 1.10 seconds in one of the closest relays of the afternoon.

Next: Carey and Camas return to Gooding's ISDB track today, Wednesday. That's the site of the May 12-13 District 1A/2A championships that is the state qualifier.
