Kids get creative in many ways at The Sun Valley Center for the Arts summer camps in July and August.

They learn the basics of creative expression, explore the natural world for inspiration or study the techniques of pop icon Andy Warhol in a studio.

Instructor Diana Sharpless offers Summer Art Camps for elementary school children ages 7-10 in mediums like drawing, painting, textiles and collage. Sharpless has a Ph.D. in art education and multi-cultural education.

Participants are involved in designing and creating arts and crafts projects. They share their ideas and artwork with the group. Kids have the freedom to express themselves as they choose.

Every child take away new skills, personalized artwork and great memories. The arts camps are divided into ages 5-6 (mornings July 19-23 and July 26-30) and ages 7-10 (afternoons July 19-23 and July 26-30).

Older kids in grades 7-9 can take to the wild area north of Ketchum for an overnight Eco-Camp Aug. 9-13. They will find inspiration in the field with Environmental Resource Center instructors versed in ecology and natural history.

"Art is important for our understanding of the natural world," said Lisa Huttinger, Education Coordinator at the Environmental Resource Center.

The Sun Valley Center will provide daily art workshops in small groups on a variety of mediums. Field instructors guide participants in applying new techniques to complement their studies of ecology, geology, and natural history.

There will be open studio time each day and campfires every night. The program will conclude with a gallery show for family and friends.

For a more urban experience, younger kids can explore the pop art techniques of notorious artist Andy Warhol with instructor Zoey Pierce.

Kids will enjoy learning about his life and his work, followed by a hands-on experience of making their own screen-print designs on various materials.

When Zoey Pierce is not teaching art at The Community School she is found producing art. Her encaustic pieces can be found throughout the Wood River Valley.

Full scholarships are available for adult and kids classes at Sun Valley Center camps. Through the generosity of donors, The Center is committed to making classes available to all members of our community. Contact Sarah Kolash at 726-9491 ext. 21.
