Ahoy, readers! Let’s make some waves

Make a splash with summer reading

Idaho's librarians have been busy all winter preparing for their summer reading programs for children. They realize summer reading is a great chance to get kids hooked on reading-for pleasure.

They dream up fun themes, and they've come up with a perfect warm weather theme for the kids in 2010.

Here goes:

Ahoy Readers! "Make a Splash—READ" is the theme at The Community Library in Ketchum, said children's librarian Kerry Bozza.

Children explore the world of water and water fun through stories, songs, games, movies and other activities about oceans, rivers, lakes, and pools and creatures living there.

The 2010 Summer Reading Program is open to young people, preschool through high school, with programs, prize drawings, story hours, a reading club, and more.

Families are invited to sign up for the "Read-to-Me" portion of the program. In addition, the Library will continue its weekly Science Story hour every Tuesday at 11 a.m. for children ages 3 years and up, as well as its weekly story hour on Saturdays at 10 a.m.

Registration for the Summer Reading Program begins on Saturday, May 29. The Summer Program will run from June 7 to Aug. 6. There will be a celebration party Friday, Aug. 13.

For more information, call the Community Library at 726-3493 or visit its Web site at thecommunitylibrary.org. All programs are free.

Hailey summer program

The Hailey Public Library (788-2036) is also making waves with its summer reading program theme of "Make a Splash—Catch a Wave."

Participants entering grades 1-8 this fall will receive their packets during the June 7-12 registration week, right after the end of the school year, and they'll receive prizes as they successfully complete portions of their reading assignments.

The reading logs will be completed from June 14 through Aug. 4, and there will be a family fun party at the end—of course, a "wet and wild" fun finale Aug. 6 from 1-3 p.m. at Cutter's Park.

Story hours are held frequently. For pre-schoolers (ages 3-5) they are Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. "Toddler Tales" for 18 months to 36 months (parent supervision required) are Fridays at 10:30 a.m.

Hailey Library hours are 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; from 11-8 Tuesdays and Thursdays; and Saturdays from 10-6. Visit haileypubliclibrary.org
