The Sun Valley Summer Symphony's Sun Valley Summer Music Workshops have the distinction of being taught by the symphony's own musicians as well as regional instructors. The workshop gives music students an opportunity to explore string, brass and woodwind instruments, percussion and piano as well as voice.
The workshop will take place Aug. 2-6 for elementary, middle and high school students. Classes for beginning through advanced students feature technique workshops, small and large group ensembles, orchestras, advanced chamber ensembles and music enrichment. The workshop will conclude with student concerts in the Sun Valley Pavilion on Friday, Aug. 6.
The Prelude Strings program will be offered for developing string players and intermediate orchestra, the Philharmonia, and the Sun Valley Youth Orchestra for advanced string players. Upper-intermediate and advanced string players are invited to audition for chamber ensembles, details are in the application materials. Technique classes, master classes, large and small group ensembles will be offered for woodwind and brass instruments as well as percussion and piano.
Voice classes and ensembles for a variety of age and ability levels are also a part of the Summer Music Workshops and select students will have a chance to perform with the Sun Valley Youth Orchestra and Chorus on the Friday evening concert. This year the workshop will feature a vocal master class for advanced students and especially those who are preparing for college auditions.
Application deadline for the Summer Music Workshops has been extended to May 15 and a registration fee for the entire week of instruction is $90, which includes the polo shirt worn at performances. A limited number of scholarships are available. Housing is not routinely provided for out-of-area students, but there are a limited number of home stays for students only.
