Very few things last 51 years, but that's a distinction of the Natural Resources Camp designed for Idaho youngsters ages 12-14. Local kids should take advantage of a week of summer excitement that is right in their own backyard.
The Idaho summer program that dates back to 1960 is held at the scenic, 7,100-foot Central Idaho 4-H Camp 18 miles north of Ketchum. The University of Idaho Extension Service and Idaho Association of Soil Conservation Districts are sponsors of the 51st annual camp.
Young participants learn from expert instructors about the importance of water, forestry, rangeland, soil, and wildlife. Cost of the hands-on camp is reasonable for families.
"Imagine a week in which exploration, learning and play are indistinguishable," said Kellie Jo Rey, camp coordinator. "That's why generations of Idahoans have looked forward to the camp for 50 years."
The hands-on event offers challenges—both mental and physical—through such activities as collecting stream insects, classifying soils, identifying trees, orienteering, preserving plants, tracking animals and stocking fish ponds. Teens watch a raptor demonstration, engage in debates and play educational games.
"With new activities and with new instructors added to a dedicated core staff, this year's camp is sure to be exciting," said Rey. "The camp's $185 cost makes it an exceptional educational value." Campers can apply for scholarships through Soil Conservation District offices.
Teachers can also receive two graduate credits in Natural Resource Conservation from the University of Idaho. By attending camp and developing a lesson plan, teachers can increase their knowledge of outdoor science education.
Camp staff for 2010 features director Amber Moore plus counselors, cabin leaders, and instructors in soils, water, range, wildlife and fish.
