Enrich summer with TCS classes

Community School offers variety

For the 2010 summer semester, The Community School in Sun Valley has a wide range of programs, from academics to the outdoors.

Outdoor learning for elementary school kids and teenagers has always been part of The Community School summer program in June through August. Taking academic courses for credit is another option.

Most classes are held on the Sun Valley campus, but the camps and outdoor programs are held on- and off-campus. Register early, as programs fill up quickly, and complete payment before May 15 to receive a 5% early registration tuition discount.

Among new wrinkles: The Community School will implement the trimester system for the 2010-11 school year, allowing the summer school course length to be reduced from its previous six weeks, to three weeks.

Call Phil Huss, the director of Summer Semester, at 622-3960 ext. 148, assistant Yvonne Inman at ext. 138, or e-mail phuss@communityschool.org. For more details visit the Web site, www.communityschool.org.

Youth camps

Popular enrichment day camps for kids and pre-teens run June 21 through Aug. 13.

They include Camp Young Pioneers (ages 4-5). Veteran staff member Susan Pollock is back to keep the little ones engaged in theme-based learning. Young kids engage in gardening, history, water fun, group games and also explore the natural world.

Camp Explorers (ages 6-8) takes the kids from hikes to the art room, making it a weeklong adventure in their local environment with camp leader and TCS alum Rian Ervin. Pioneers and Explorers are $350 for each two-week session.

Camp Adventurers (ages 9-14) offers plenty of sports and fun with a student ratio of six-to-one, cost $650 for each of the two-week sessions. There are also tennis clinics for intermediate and advanced with local teaching pro Chris Gripkey at Bigwood Tennis Courts

Academic enrichment programs including Spanish for ages 4-11, math, movie editing and study skills.

Fun for middle school students

The middle school-aged student has some exciting options in 2010, both in and out of the classroom.

A study skills course for those making the transition from the middle to upper school will be taught by JoEllen Collins, and Kathleen Uberuaga

offers a class on writing for students.

Middle schoolers looking to get outdoors can participate in a tennis clinic, or get adventurous with hiking, kayaking and climbing programs.

Upper School

Upper school students have around 20 courses, both academic and athletic, to choose from. At the high school level, students can take English, Creative Writing, Spanish, Science, Music and History for credit.

Long known for its SAT Prep courses in the summer, The Community School will offer one again this year. Outdoor education offerings include Wilderness First Aid and a Wilderness First Responder course, rock climbing and mountain biking.

This summer, cross-country skiers can again fine tune their training and learn new things in the classroom during a collaborative summer program offered through The Community School and the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation.

SVSEF dry land training runs from June 7 through Aug. 13 with multiple workouts through the week, according to head coach Rick Kapala. SVSEF dry land summer training runs $600 for 24 sessions. TCS summer program courses are individually priced.
