‘Live wires’ cause excitement

By TERRY SMITH

Sparks flew and electrical pops sounded as three motorists plowed into downed power lines early Thursday on state Highway 75 south of Bellevue.

"Luckily, no one was electrocuted, probably because of the rubber tires," Blaine County Sheriff's Lt. Jay Davis said Monday.

Davis said the incident was reported to authorities about 4 a.m. He said the motorists who struck the downed lines stayed at the scene to stop other traffic until emergency responders and Idaho Power Co. personnel arrived.

Davis said the situation was caused by another vehicle that earlier struck and "sheared off" a tension support pole on the west side of the highway near Pero Road. As the support pole fell, it pulled the top off a wooden power pole on the east side of the highway, leaving the "live wires" stretched across the highway a few feet above the roadway.

He said the vehicle that hit the support pole left the scene and has not been identified.

"The main point is we don't know who did it, and we'd like to know who did it," Davis said.
