Blaine County Commission Chair Larry Schoen will head to Washington, D.C., to take part in a leadership training program.

From June 1-5, Schoen, along with 24 other county leaders, will participate in the seventh annual County Leadership Institute, held at IBM's Institute for Electronic Government.

Schoen was nominated for the program by Dan Chadwick, executive director of the Idaho Association of Counties.

Assisting with the program are representatives from George Washington University's Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration.

During the program, the leaders will discuss the core principles of public service and collaborate to develop new ways to take on critical issues facing their constituents.

"The county officials who participate in the institute get information, ideas and perspectives they can't get anywhere else," said Larry Naake, executive director of the National Association of Counties.

In the past six years, the program has graduated 141 members from 42 states and 138 counties across the U.S.

Schoen said the leadership training will benefit both himself and the county by providing training on developing public policy and methods for its implementation.

"This will help me better understand how to introduce and resolve complex and conflict-ridden issues," Schoen said. "It's a great opportunity to hear from some of the best people in this area, as well as from colleagues from across the country, so I'll be able to pick up new ideas and see how it's done elsewhere."
