Why are stores giving out reusable bags?

Ask Ida

Dear Ida B. Green,

I hear that Hailey merchants will be giving out reusable bags this Earth Day instead of using plastic or paper bags. Why would they do that?

Signed,

Freebie Lover

Dear Freebie,

Plastic bags have a negative impact on our environmental and our financial bottom line, so several local merchants are trying to do something about both by helping us reduce our reliance on them.

Using a set of strong, reusable bags to carry merchandise from the store to your door helps reduce the number of bags that must be made, trucked, bought, land-filled and littered—just to carry your new stuff that one time.

Using your own bags can save an average of 6 plastic bags per week. That is 24 bags a month, which adds up to an amazing 22,176 bags in your lifetime. And that's not even counting the pile of bags you collect from a trip to Twin or holiday shopping.

Only by seriously reducing the number of plastic bags that are produced and put into the long life cycle of plastics can we avoid the very long downside of the simple plastic bag.

Join the effort this April 22nd when Hailey merchants will not be using plastic or paper bags at the checkout stands and are asking you to begin remembering your own bags to carry your purchases.

Easy to be Green,

Ida
