Sports summary


There he goes, Mr. Wolverine!

Mr. Wolverine is coming!

Wood River's male beauty and talent pageant is back today, Wednesday April 14 at 7 p.m. at The Community Campus auditorium, Hailey. Come out and support family fun.

The third annual presentation features Wood River High students Sam Schwab, Steven Poklemba, Chauncey McGraw, Keven Abbott, Zeb Glenn, Nick Chase, Tanner Marcoullier, Juan Martinez Tyler Wolfley, Patrick Shipp and Tyler Peters.

Teachers Chet Olson and Julia Grafft are the hosts, and the judges are Dody Chatterton, Bruce Tuxhorn, James Foster and Kari Haugen. Teacher Stephanie Spindler's Student Union Leadership Team is presenting the popular event.

Tickets are on sale at the Hailey high school for $6 or at the door for $8.

Miles on a mission in Spring Series GS

Ketchum's Miles Fink-Debray, 22, made another statement of his ski racing ability Sunday, winning the Western Region Elite Spring Series men's giant slalom in Washington State by .68 seconds over Eastern skier Hig Roberts.

On Skookum Run at Mission Ridge, Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation racer Fink-Debray put down the second-best time in the first run and the fourth-best clocking in the second to lead the field of 116 starters and 99 finishers.

Fink-Debray enjoyed a decent series at Mission Ridge, finishing fifth and sixth overall in the two super giant slaloms.

Boise's Hailey Duke, the Olympic skier who grew up in Sun Valley, won Saturday's slalom by .59 seconds over U.S. Ski Team teammate Sarah Schleper.

Other SVSEF racers competing at Mission Ridge among 120 men and 90 women were Tanner Farrow, Bergen Palmer, Miles Sweek, Teagen Palmer, Amanda Stelling and Nicole Roos. Results by race were:

Men's SG: Miles Fink-Debray 5th and 6th overall; Bergen Palmer 26th; Tanner Farrow 31st; and Miles Sweek 54th (11th J2).

Ladies SG: Teagen Palmer 36th; Amanda Stelling 61st; and Nicole Roos 71st.

Men's GS: Miles Fink-Debray 1st overall; Bergen Palmer 42nd; Tanner Farrow 58th; and Miles Sweek 89th.

Ladies SL: Teagen Palmer 20th (6th J2); Nicole Roos 39th (9th J2) and 30th (7th J2).

Men's SL: Fink-Debray 24th; Bergen Palmer 28th (17th J1); Tanner Farrow 39th (6th J2); and Miles Sweek 77th.

Savaria at Whistler Cup

SVSEF alpine racer KJ Savaria was on the 24-member U.S. team at the 18th annual Whistler Cup April 9-11 in British Columbia, the largest and most important race in North America for athletes ages 11-14.

Savaria's best result at the 2010 Winter Olympic site of Whistler Mountain was 16th overall (the 5th American) out of 57 two-run finishers (105 starters) in Saturday's K2 slalom. He was 20th in Friday's super giant slalom and had a bad first run in Sunday's GS, settling for 77th.

Lampl on Idaho Steelheads for Kelly Cup playoffs

Ketchum's 5-10, 165-pound defenseman Cody Lampl, 23, is on the Idaho Steelheads roster for the Kelly Cup hockey playoffs this weekend at Qwest Arena in Boise. The Steelheads play their first two games Friday, April 16 and Saturday, April 17, doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the opening faceoffs at 7:10 p.m. Tickets range from $17 to $34.50 per person.

Winner of the ECHL Kelly Cup in 2007, the Steelheads (48-17-7, 103 points) have earned home ice advantage throughout the 2010 playoffs for earning the top seed in the National Conference. For the first time in franchise history, the Steelies have won the Brabham Cup for amassing the most points in the 20-team ECHL for the regular season. Idaho's fifth-year coach Derek Laxdal, 44, was named the "Coach of the Year."

The organizational meeting of the 2010 Hailey Coed Softball League has been scheduled for Thursday, April 22 at 6:30 p.m. at The Wicked Spud in Hailey. Details, call league organizer Mike Beall at 720-6842.

Reynoso goes five-plus for Gwinnett Braves in debut

He didn't make a winning debut, but Bellevue's Ryne Reynoso, 25, threw a good game for the Triple A International League Gwinnett (Ga.) Braves (2-2) on a 71-degree Sunday afternoon before 5,768 fans at Coolray Field in Gwinnett. Reynoso (80 pitches, 49 for strikes, 5-plus innings, 7 hits, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K) pitched well in an 8-2 loss to the Charlotte Knights (2-2). He held the Knights scoreless for four innings—the longest streak for a Braves starting pitcher in four games so far. It was the first AAA regular-season start for Reynoso, who put a pair of runners on base in the sixth and left the game, getting no help from the pen.

Dollar Mountain ski and boardercross

As part of its Dollar-Dayz end-of-season party April 3, Sun Valley Resort held a skier cross and boarder cross race on Dollar Mountain. Results:

Skiers ages 6-and-under: 1—Cate Ritzel. 2—Leo Molter. 3—Zoe Bacca.

Falls to Falls 5.2-mile run April 24

Sign-ups are being accepted at spondoro.com for the annual Falls to Falls 5.2-mile walk and run Saturday, April 24 at 8:30 a.m. starting at the Idaho Power Park in Twin Falls' Snake River canyon. Finish is at Dierkes Lake east of Twin Falls. Registration is from 7-7:45 a.m. at Dierkes Lake, from where buses will take runners to the start at Idaho Power Park. Kristin Armstrong bike clinic for women is May 28-30

Doing anything special over Memorial Day weekend? How about taking part in a three-day bicycle clinic conducted by Olympic gold medalist Kristin Armstrong of Boise? It is scheduled for May 28-30 headquartered at the Wood River Community YMCA in Ketchum. It's open to all women riders, of all ages, beginner to intermediate. Cost is $350. Mountain bikers have a bash at Barking Spider

A strong contingent of Wood River Valley mountain bikers joined the fun of the 2010 Wild Rockies debut Saturday, April 10 at the 15th annual Barking Spider Bash held at Hemingway Butte south of Nampa.

The group featured several Mud Honey team racers based in Ketchum led by Janelle Conners of Hailey, who finished second overall in the Category 1 Expert women's race over nearly 18 miles with a time of 1.53:59. She was only 56 seconds back of winner Lori Smith of Boise.

Another Mud Honey, India Wysong of Ketchum, was sixth among Pro Women in 2.40:54 for 28 miles.

Here are other Wood River results. In general, the Pros and Category 1 Experts ran 2.75 laps of the 10.2-mile course, the Category 2 Sports went 1.75 laps and the Category 3 Beginners did 1.0 lap:

Category 1—Women 30-39: 2—Michelle Andersen of Boise 1.58:18 (7th overall). Women 40-and-up: 4—Muffy Ritz 1.59:53 (8th overall).

Category 1—Men 30-39: 6—Moses Mexia 2.19:11. 11—Cameron Lloyd 2.32:36. Men 40-49: 9—Marc Driver 2.21:32. 10—Chris Gardner 2.22:17. 11—Kyle Rafford 2.22:24.
