Caulkins shatters WRHS 3200-meter run record

At Friday’s meet in Burley

How low can Chase Caulkins go before he graduates from Hailey's Wood River High School at the end of May?

Caulkins went pretty low Friday at Burley in the 3200-meter run during a triangular track and field meet between Wood River, Burley and Minico. He went lower than any Wolverine has gone before.

The senior who is planning to run for the University of Portland (Ore.) Pilots in the fall smashed the 16-year-old Wood River 3200m run record by 16 seconds with a personal-record 9:33.34 at the two-mile distance.

Speaking about the mild weather with gentle breezes AT Burley, Wood River track and field coach Monte Brothwell said, "Chase finally had the weather to make an assault on the 1994 record of 9:49.24 set by Benji Jex. His time was also a Burley 3200m track record."

Caulkins placed sixth in the 2009 State 4A 3200m run with a time of 10:03, well behind the meet-best time of 9.20:82 set by Preston's Colby Wilson.

Other winning classification 3200m times at state in 2009 were 9:34, 9:46, 9:52 and 10:01. The State 4A boys' record of 9:27.73 was set by Century's Chio Lopez in 2007. The overall state mark of 9:06.58 was set by Bonneville's Jed Barta in 1999.

The Caulkins achievement was the highlight, but Wood River also had 26 personal-bests at Burley and enjoyed another first with a 1600m sweep featuring winner Caulkins (4:36), James Paris (4:47), Ben Stout (4:56 PR) and Andrew Pfeiffer (5:12 PR).

"We had excellent throws in the discus and shot by Cheyenne Swanson and Colton Seely," said Brothwell. "Cheyenne set a new sophomore class record in the discus at 108-8."

Besides Caulkins' double wins in the distances, junior Paris captured the 800m in a personal-record 2:03.00. Wood River athletes piled up eight second-place efforts at Burley including the boys' 4x400m relay of Miles Hendrix, Paris, Stout and anchor Caulkins.

Next: The Buhl Rotary Invitational Thursday, April 15 at Buhl. Meanwhile, Caulkins (3200m) and Paris (1600m) plan to compete at the prestigious Pasco (Wash.) Invitational Saturday, April 17. There, the Pasco 3200m record is 8:57.1.
