Be realistic about Bergdahl

While all of us in this community wish Bowe Bergdahl well and hope for his safe return, it is so very painful for me to read "I want to go home" on the front page of the Express.

Although his comment cannot be overlooked, it seems to fuel the enthusiasm that people have that there is a remote possibility for that to happen. In my opinion, it is time for a reality check in regard to Pfc. Berdahl's situation. Pfc. Bergdahl is in the U.S. Army. He enlisted knowing full well all the possibilities that come with going to war. It is not a game like hide-and-seek or kick-the-can. One does not "go home" when the going gets tough.

The comment "I want to go home" leads one to think that it may have been something that Pfc. Bergdahl's captors wanted him to say. I am sure that Bowe realizes that his first obligation is to the U.S. Army and his unit. Bergdahl's words, "I want to go home," coupled with his beard, which mirrors those of his captors, might lead one to wonder if Pfc. Bergdahl is not suffering from Stockholm syndrome. Let's hope not.

As for trading prisoners, that seems ludicrous in my opinion. Do you release one terrorist for one G.I., one foot soldier for another? A G.I. who wants to go home for dozens of terrorists who go on killing innocent men, women and children forever? Time for another reality check perhaps.
