After the spring snowstorms of Monday and Tuesday, Sun Valley Masters showed their speed and slalom skills, pocketing medals Wednesday during the 2010 Skier's Edge Masters Nationals on Baldy.
Sun Valley's Class 1 Carl Rixon Jr. won the Group A/B (ages 21-59) men's super giant slalom gold medal Wednesday with a 1:02.64 time, 1.55 seconds ahead of Sun Valley's Class 3 Robin Sarchett (1:04.19). Rixon, 28, led the field of 85 as Intermountain Masters placed six racers in the top 10 of SG.
Others in the SG top-10: 3—Matt Murphy, 51, in 1:04.93. 5—Biche Rudigoz 1:05.46. 6—Nate Schwing 1:05.80. 10—John Campbell 1:07.56. All won SG gold in their classes except for silver medalist Class 1 Rudigoz.
Sarchett, 36, parlayed his second-place SG finish and first-place slalom run into the super combined gold medal—by a whopping 2.57-second margin over Sun Valley's Class 2 winner Nate Schwing, 31. Silver medalist Rixon was fifth.
< Sun Valley's Class 1 Erika Hogan won the Class C super combined Wednesday and former Baldy racer Carol Levine, 62, was seventh overall, the top Class 8 (60-64). Also winning gold in combined were overall ninth-place Anna Droege, 71, and 10th-place Nancy Auseklis, 69.
The stormy weather did cause changes in the schedule. Monday's scheduled super combined (one run each SG and SL) was changed so that all competitors had their SL run; and because the SG leg could not be held on Monday, the other leg of the SC was scored using the results from the national championship SG.
Other class podiums for locals Wednesdays included:
Super combined: 1—Nancy Dreyer, Virginia Reed, Matt Murphy and Edgar Fenwick. 2—Rosemary Moschel, Drury Cooper and Bob Sarchett. 3—Amy Lanzel, John Campbell and Bob Dreyer.
Super giant slalom: 1—Jim Grossman, Edgar Fenwick, Erika Hogan, Carol Levine, Anna Droege and Nancy Auseklis. 3—Bob Dreyer, Bob Sarchett and Heidi Flood.
