Ski journalists to convene at resort

Sun Valley plans to show off facilities

About 80 of the country's premier snow-sports journalists will convene at Sun Valley Resort today through Sunday for the annual meeting of the North American Snowsports Journalists Association.

"This is a chance to showcase our product here," said Mark Thoreson, Sun Valley's winter sales manager.

Thoreson said the journalists of the 47-year-old association would be shown around the slopes and given tours of the facilities, including Bald Mountain's expansive snowmaking system. The Sun Valley-Ketchum Chamber & Visitors Bureau is also lending a helping hand by organizing alternative activities that will prompt the journalists to visit local businesses.

"The result of hosting this group ... will be future media coverage on the area early next winter season in a variety of ski- and travel-media outlets across the country," said Ramona Duke, social media manager for the chamber.

However, Thoreson said, increased coverage isn't guaranteed.

"The amount of print we get, you can never predict," he said.

The group's annual meeting was originally planned for Tamarack Resort, 90 miles north of Boise, but Tamarack closed last winter. Thoreson said the last time Sun Valley hosted the association's meeting was in 1998.
