The Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley wants to reach as many supporters as it can, and has planned its first Fur Ball benefit to appeal to a younger donor audience and recession budgets. In addition, the first Fur Ball will have live music by Steve Miller and The Accelerators, which is Bruce Willis' band.

"We wanted to attract a different crowd and thought April would be a fun time do it," said Sheila Liermann, Animal Shelter director. "We want to have a bigger spectrum of people who could afford and support the shelter."

The Fur Ball will take place on Friday, April 2, at 8 p.m. at The Mint in Hailey. Prior to Steve Miller and The Accelerators and between music sets, DJ Yo Mama Productions will spin tunes. Tickets are $30 and available at Sun Valley Brokers at 680 Sun Valley Rd. in Ketchum and at the Barkin' Basement in Hailey.

The benefit will include a 50/50 raffle in which the winner receives 50 percent of all raffle earnings; the other 50 percent will go to the Animal Shelter. In addition, the event will have a cookie count for $5, in which participants guess the number of dog biscuits in a jar. The closest guess wins $300. Jars are located at The Barkin' Basement and Hailey Coffee Co. in Hailey and DL Evans Bank and Thunderpaws Pet Shoppe in Ketchum.

The benefit attire is casual or costume. People are encouraged to dress up like a dog or cat and the best dressed will win prizes in the following categories: the Mischievous Mutt, Designer Doggie, Cavorting Cat and Frisky Feline. State health laws prohibit four-legged animals from attending, but all humans are invited to "dance your paws off and party for your pets."
