Frederick Lane is the author of "Living in a Wired World: Can Personal Privacy Survive in the 21st Century?" He will give a talk with a book signing at the nexStage Theatre in Ketchum on Wednesday, March 10, at 7 p.m.
"The real focus of the talk will be on the privacy implications of new technology and social networking," Lane said. "We want privacy but are constantly distributing information about ourselves."
Lane said the irony about being a privacy expert and writing about how it all works is that it's at the cost of living a very public life. He is the author of five books and is a frequent guest on national radio and television programs, including "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart." He has lectured at universities and organizations across the country on topics such as technology and privacy, online harassment and discrimination, "sexting" and how copyright and plagiarism laws apply to electronic communications.
In addition to his writing and public speaking, Lane is a computer forensics expert and frequently provides consultation and expert witness services in civil and criminal cases. A graduate of Amherst College and Boston College Law School, he lives in Burlington, Vt., with his family.
"I will also focus on basic solution skills, which are knowing who your friends are online, much the same as it is in the real world," Lane said. "A critical piece to understanding all this is, do we have a mechanism in place to review the government and how the government does surveillance?"
Lane said he is worried about the federal government and the Patriot Act.
Books to be signed will be on sale at the lecture or can be bought ahead of time at local booksellers. Tickets are $10 for Sun Valley Center for the Arts members and $15 for nonmembers. For details, call 726-9491.
