Suns skate to fourth in Midgets tilt


The Sun Valley Suns capped the season with a fourth-place finish at the Idaho High School State Championships in Idaho Falls, Feb. 27-28.

In the semifinals of the nine-team tournament, the Suns fell to eventual champion Skyline, 6-5 in overtime, despite a 26-17 shot margin over the Grizzlies. Jackson Bates recorded a hat trick in the game.

The Suns (2-2) other loss was a 3-1 decision to tournament runner-up Meridian. Skyline claimed the crown, beating Meridian 3-0 on penalty shots, according to Suns' coach Chris Benson.

Sun Valley knocked off nemesis Idaho Falls 6-2, and Borah/Capital 3-0 behind goalie Teagan Foster's 15-save shutout. Cassidy Carson played goalie against Meridian and made 30 saves.

Ian Murphy led the team with 4 goals and 2 assists. Also, Jackson Bates 3/1, Jimmy Hague 2/2, Charlie Evans 2/2, Latner Straley 3/0, Tommy Heinrich 0/3, Niels McMahon 0/3, Cooper Hanley 1/1, Doug King 1/1, Tom Crosby 0/2, Crockett Stearns 0/1. Davis Hague, Alexander MacMillan, Anthony Martin and Zak Sjoberg also skated.
