On the ultimate Olympic hockey weekend, eight Squirt (9-10 year old) hockey teams displayed some inspiring play of their own at the Sun Valley Invitational Feb. 27-28 at Sun Valley Skating Center.

The 33 skaters who make up Sun Valley Youth Hockey's squirt program were divided into two teams: Sun Valley White and Sun Valley Black. Rounding out the tournament field were the Boise Steelheads (4-0), Jackson Hole Brown (1-3), Jackson Hole Gold (3-1), Idaho Falls Gold (3-1), Idaho Falls Black (1-3) and Salmon (1-3).

The Steelheads compiled a 4-0 record in round-robin play, outscoring opponents 21-2. Sun Valley White was the only squad to find the back of the net against Boise and gave them all they could handle in a game that saw the Suns score first and then tie the game 2-2 with 6:40 remaining. The Steelheads answered with a pair of goals in the final 6:03 to win 4-2 in their closest game of the tournament.

< White (2-2) book-ended its losses (Jackson Gold 4-1) by opening with a 7-4 victory over Jackson Hole Brown, and finished with a flourish, defeating Idaho Falls Black 8-4. The team scored 18 goals and allowed 16.

Skating for the squad were Sydney Roberts, Kinley Miller, Anik Zarkos, Kyle Furlong, Jamie Rollerson, James Everitt, Nick Smith, Colby Whitehead, Luke Marcoullier, Henry Raff, Charlie Stumph, Sam Robideaux, Alvaro Jiraldo, Paxton Bunting, Sam Hebert and Will Hebert.

Sun Valley Black (1-3) scored in every game and three of the contests were decided by a slim one-goal margin. Black's lone victory was a 3-2 decision over Jackson Hole Brown. A 5-4 loss to Idaho Falls Gold may have felt like a win after the Suns made up a 5-0 deficit, scoring four goals in the third period, the last with 30 seconds on the clock.

In other games, Salmon scored two power play goals to edge Black 2-1, and the Suns fell to Jackson Gold 5-1.

Black skaters were Sophie Nasvik, Scout Hutchinson, McKenzie Ellison, Jack Stevens, Chris Nordsieck, Alec Broman, Tiernan Naghsh, Matt Galgano, Ry Goodwin, Jake Blackburn, Bo Sensenbrenner, Sam Ballard, Barrett Ott, George Prekeges, Ike Buxton, Flynn Stewart and Jett Erickson.

Pete Prekeges, Phil Hebert, John Stevens, Sheila Naghsh, Bryan Furlong and John Sensenbrenner ably coached the teams.
