Stressful times aren’t new

Time seems to soften things, so one doesn't vividly remember how it really was once.

Recently, I was trying to compare the harsh realities and anxieties of today with when I was raising my family in the early 1960s. It was a time when the threat of a nuclear holocaust was very real; one felt completely helpless to do anything to help prevent one's family from possibly becoming instant burnt toast. This threat was a constant "hum" in the background of daily life. One tried unsuccessfully to blot it out.

In fact, for six months, I spent most evenings digging a fallout shelter in the backyard. Realistically, it seemed pointless; but at least I was doing something. It was sort of like a pioneer dad digging a hole under his cabin to hide from the Indians, only to have them burn the cabin down!

At least today, most will eventually have the chance dig themselves out of their personal dilemma.
