Storm basketball a winner

The Sun Valley Storm seventh-grade girls' basketball team won the Idaho Prep Tournament Feb. 27 at Canyon Ridge High School in Twin Falls. The Storm swept all four of its games with teams from southern and central Idaho. Coaches were Jim Bradley and Raeghen Peavey. Players were Rory Cole, Sammy Sutton, Haylee Pettit, Brittney Bradley, Ashley Hicks, Kenya Schott and Brittney Bowers.

City bowling tourney here

The Wood River Bowling Association is staging its annual city tournament this week at Mountain Sun Lanes in Bellevue. Open team event was Tuesday, with the Women's team event tonight, Wednesday. Finals in singles and doubles are Saturday and Sunday.

Volleyball girls wins tourney at Buhl

The Wood River Volleyball Club eighth-grade team won its first tournament of the club season in Buhl Saturday. The local girls defeated Kimberly in the finals in straight sets. Team members were coach Lesley Sliman, Christina Contreras, Shelby and Cassidy Cooper, Sadie Dawson, Gisel Guzman, Emily Hudson, Lauren Jacobs, Courtney Lecrone, Mary Petzke, Kendra Price, Isabel Kirk and Samantha Rodriguez. The team travels to Valley for its next meet Saturday, March 6.

Sawtooth Ski Festival coming March 6-7 to Stanley

The Stanley area invites visitors to the eighth annual Sawtooth Ski Festival on Saturday and Sunday, March 6-7 at the Sawtooth Valley's cross-country ski trail systems of Park Creek and Alturas Lake.

The weekend is a fundraiser for the Sawtooth Ski Club, a non-profit organization that provides groomed Nordic ski trails in the Sawtooth Valley and Stanley Basin.

The fundraiser begins with the Park Creek Poker Run and Chili Feed on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. Chili is served from noon until 2 p.m. At Park Creek, located seven miles west of Stanley, skiers and snowshoers follow a course, pick up cards at check points and the best poker hand wins new snowshoes from Backwoods Mountain Sports of Ketchum. A dinner with a silent auction and bluegrass music by Headwaters begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Stanley Community Building. Sunday's activities take place at Alturas Lake.

Nordic skiers Hamilton, Arritola to Scandinavia

Based on his promising sprint result at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, Simi Hamilton of the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation has been invited by the U.S. Ski Team to compete at the World Cup Sprint Races in Drammen and Oslo, Norway this month. Joining Hamilton will be SVSEF skier and current USST member Morgan Arritola. The races in Oslo are important as they provide the U.S. athletes with a preview of the courses to be used for the 2011 Nordic World Championships in Norway.

Half marathon training program starts at YMCA

The Wood River Community YMCA is offering a 13-week training program designed to prepare runners for June's sixth annual Sun Valley Half Marathon. Training dates are Saturdays at 8:30 a.m. from March 6 to May 29. The 13-week program will consist of weekly presentations on topics specific to half marathons. B+ hockey update

Sharks (9-2-1) moved within one game of the #1 seed in the upcoming Hutch Cup playoffs by thrashing Isles (5-5-2) by an 8-1 score Sunday at Sun Valley Skating Center. Getting twofers for the first-place Sharks were Jim Slanetz, Rob Prew and Brad Mushbach. Christl Holzl and Justin Hellman added singles. Crugar Thomas erased the Isles goose egg.

Hutch's Bad Dogs (4-6-2) moved into fourth place with their second straight win. Behind goals from Chris Roberts and Mako Johnson the

Dogs erased an early lead by the last-place Wildcats (2-7-3) to win 2-1. Billy Sprong scored for the Cats.

Senators (2-5-5) got a late goal from Dean Dalzell to equalize 2-2 with the second-place Vipers (6-3-3) before the final buzzer. The fifth-place Nats got an early goal from Baird Gourlay and led going into the second. Jini Griffith and Benjy Walker scored the Vipers goals.

Two weeks remain in the regular season with the first round of the Hutch Playoffs starting March 21.

New baseball academy formed

Former Wood River High School baseball coach Lars Hovey has started the new Sawtooth Baseball Academy designed for 10-and-under players who want to raise their level of play. The program will not interfere with existing Blaine County Recreation District and Wood River Baseball and Softball Association programs, Hovey said. Visit sawtoothbaseball.com for details.

Dogsled races in Fairfield, Stanley Basin

Soldier Mountain Quest is the name of this weekend's two-day dogsled race event in Fairfield. The main races will be in the Chimney Creek area, but the sprints will occur Friday, March 5 at 6 p.m. in downtown Fairfield. The Musher is the Camas County mascot, and all proceeds will be directed to the Camas County School District. Next weekend, the Stanley Basin hosts the Stanley Dogtown Sled Dog Rendezvous on Saturday, March 13.

Soldier Mountain Alpine Racing and the SVSEF Freestyle Team will jointly host the 20th annual Lane Parrish Memorial races Friday through Sunday, March 12-14 on Baldy. The Parrish will include three events—halfpipe Friday, bumps Saturday and super giant slalom Sunday. The event is open to all interested skiers and snowboarders. Signups are being taken at Apple's Bar and Grill, Warm Springs in Ketchum, and at the SVSEF Greyhawk office all week before the event. New lacrosse youth program has meeting Thursday

Starting in April, the Wood River Warriors Lacrosse Club is starting a youth program for boys in grades 4-8. A registration meeting is Thursday, March 4 at 6 p.m. at The Community Campus commons, Hailey. There, parents will find sample equipment packages in several sizes for the boys to try on, Organizer Jay Bailet (720-7438) said, "Our purpose is to have a well established program in the Wood River Valley when lacrosse is sanctioned by the Idaho High School Activities Association, putting us far ahead of other schools in our region."
