Suns (11-5) sweep, skate in finale against Seattle

Benefit for Ivars Muzis is Sunday

They distributed the scoring pretty evenly as the Sun Valley Suns senior men's ice hockey team ran its winning streak to three games last weekend with a 10-4 and 8-3 home sweep of the Bozeman (Mt.) Stingers.

Sun Valley (11-5) had eight different scorers led by two goals apiece from Jamie Ellison and Charles Friedman in Friday's 10-4 victory over the shorthanded Stingers. There were seven Suns scorers in Saturday's 8-3 win, Cody Proctor leading the way with two.

Boise-based defenseman Jeremy Mylymok spent the weekend in Sun Valley and led the Suns scoring with one goal and six assists for seven points. He has been unusually productive, 14 points in just six games.

First-year goaltender Colby Stoecklein earned the victories in both games as the Suns swept a two-game series for the third time this winter season.

Unfortunately, two of the Suns leaders suffered injuries that prematurely ended their seasons before Sun Valley entertains the Seattle (Wash.) Indians March 5-6 at 7 p.m.

Assistant captain and seventh-year goaltender Ryan Thomson suffered a high groin tear during Friday's warm-ups and played only sparingly. Captain Vilnis Nikolaisons left the ice with a concussion early in the third period Saturday.

The Wood River Baseball and Softball Association will benefit from proceeds from the Saturday night finale. Check today's Express Web site for a Suns-Stingers summary from Feb. 26-27 and team statistics.

Ivars Muzis benefit Sunday

Former Suns skater Steve McCoy is organizing a weekend benefit for 12th-year Sun Valley defenseman Ivars Muzis.

Ketchum's Whiskey Jacques will stage the benefit Sunday, March 7 from 6-9 p.m. Those who can't make it to Whiskeys Sunday may contribute to the Ivars Muzis Benefit Account at D.L. Evans bank branches. Any questions, email SunsHockey@gmail.com

Sunday's event includes a raffle with prizes from Grumpy's, Lefty's, Sturtevants, Whiskeys, Scott USA, The Cellar, Sushi on Second, Stoecklein Gallery, Sun Valley Company, Sun Valley Suns, The Casino and Wise Guy Pizza.

Muzis, 36, learned two weeks ago that a propane explosion destroyed the home of his parents near Riga, Latvia. His mother suffered critical burns, McCoy said. Muzis left Feb. 18 for Latvia and his return to Ketchum is unknown.

Yoga goes to school for Gund Cup

Yoga College of India won the 2010 Gund Cup Senior Hockey League tournament title Monday night with an easy 7-1 victory over SunValley.com at Sun Valley Skating Center.

The collegians (8-6) started quickly when Sean Buckley scored on Yoga's first shift, then they added three goals in the second period and three more in the third. SunValley.com finished up 5-8-1.

Besides Buckley, Yoga scorers were Noah Loyd 2 goals/0 assists, Blake Jenson 1/1, Brad Dredge 1/1, Peter Whitehead 1/2, Clint Lightner 1/0, Don Saver 0/1 and Taylor Rothgeb 0/1. Ryan Enrico scored for SV.com assisted by Shannon Flavin.

Morgan's Fine Finishes (8-6) won Monday's Gund Cup consolation final 3-2 over SV Auto Club/Grumpy's (6-7-1). Dale Johnson, Dave Hennessy and John McGuone scored for Morgan's. Cody Proctor had a pair of goals for Grumpy's.
