Nordic kids are good sports at Whitefish

It was a great weekend of team spirit, racing and costumes for 23 Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation cross-country skiers at Whitefish, Mt. Feb. 27-28 for the Western States Youth Ski Festival.

Sun Valley won the prestigious Sportsmanship Trophy and placed third in the overall team competition. Overall winners in the 85-skier field included J4 Annika Landis and J6 Cash Dart. Coaches traveling with the group were Kelley Sinnott, Ashley Wells, Dave Bingham and Paddy McIlvoy.

Saturday's races were interval start freestyle and obstacle course. On Sunday it was downhill and classic. Competing were skiers from Idaho, Wyoming, Montana and Washington. Placings by event are listed in this order—skate (3-kilometer/2k/1k), obstacle, DH and classic (3k/2k/1k):

J3 (ages 12-13): Nate Thomas 5-8-6-11; Galena Hansen 13-10-4-DNS; Cheyanne Stopol 15-8-6-13; Chloe Evans 16-15-16-15; Tom Gillespie 21-14-11-20; and Xavier Haemmerle 23-19-18-23.

J4 girls (ages 10-11): Annika Landis 1-1-1-2; Victoria Castellano-Wood 3-10-3-8; and Emily Siegel 10-5-6-7.

J4 boys: Zach Williams 3-4-8-6; Kristian DeWolfe 6-7-6-7; Carter Ros 8-2-2-9; Taylor Koth 12-12-11-5; Peter Wolter 7-20-7-8; Ben Brunelle 10-6-3-12; Jacob Truxal 13-11-10-11; Alex Feldman 11-5-12-10; Theo Castellano-Wood 14-19-9-13; Logan Jones-Wilkins 15-15-14-14; Cooper Roquet 16-13-13-15; and Landon Nurge 18-10-20-18.

J6 (ages 6-7): Cash Dart 1-1-1-4; and Ella Wolter 3-3-3-2.

Skiers to Junior Nationals

Twelve SVSEF Nordic will leave Friday, March 5 for the 2010 USSA Cross Country Junior Nationals set for March 8-13 at Presque Isle, Maine. They'll fly from Boise to Boston, then take a seven-hour drive.

Traveling with 11 coaches including Rick Kapala and Chris Mallory of SVSEF Nordic, they'll be part of the 45-athlete Intermountain Division squad headed to Maine. They'll return Sunday, March 14.

From SVSEF: J1s (16-17) Scott Schoen, Daniel Sundali, William Spiller, Torin Tucker, Emily Williams and Morgan Atkinson; and J2s (14-15) Zach Lindahl, Jackson Long, Sloan Storey, Maggie Williams and Maranda Stopol; plus Older Junior (18-19) Erik Fagerstrom.

Classic sprints are Monday, March 8, with 15k/10k/5k classic racing March 10, then freestyle 10k/5k racing March 12 and freestyle relays March 13.

Also, nine SVSEF J2s are headed to the New England J2 Championships March 4-13 at Jackson, N.H where over 200 14-15 year-olds will gather.
