SV girls extend state hockey reign

State winners again

Led by seniors Ashley Hesteness, Nellie Brown and Morgan Pintler, the Sun Valley Youth Hockey girls' hockey team won its second consecutive Idaho State Championship Sunday, Feb. 21 at Ice World, Boise.

Sun Valley, coached by Dave Hennessy and Eddie Grimes, won for the first time in five meetings this season against the Boise Herricanes and did it in Sunday's championship game by a convincing 5-2 score.

Trailing 1-0, Sun Valley tied it 1-1 on a Dylan Peterson breakaway goal and then broke the game wide open with three unanswered goals in the second period—two by Hesteness and another by Tanner Dredge.

Sun Valley (2-1-1 at state) outscored its opponents 16-5 and amassed 107 shots in four games. But the defense of the Sun Valley championship team was equally as good in front of goalie Emma Wilander (45 shots, 40 saves). Wilander made 16 huge saves in the finale.

The champs lost their opener 2-1 to Boise, but beat Salmon 9-0 and tied Idaho Falls 1-1. Sun Valley advanced to the championship game on goal differential. Weekend scoring:

Ashley Hesteness 6 goals/0 assists; Tanner Dredge 3/2; Frannie Sensenbrenner 2/0; Dylan Peterson 2/3; Nellie Brown 1/1; Ellie Swanson 1/1; Daniela Stokes 1/0; Erin Hennessy 0/1; Kelly Hennessy 0/1; and Georgy Goodwin 0/1.

Kelly Hennessy earned a game puck in the Idaho Falls game.
