Daniel Begovich

Our beloved Dan died unexpectedly on Jan. 7, 2010. He will be missed by friends and family from all chapters of his life, who treasured him as a kind man of sterling character.

Daniel Begovich was born Jan. 14, 1957, in San Francisco, California, to Dan and Emma Begovich. He graduated from Mills High School and UC Berkeley where he played varsity basketball for the Golden Bears. He was named Most Valuable Player in 1977, and was awarded the Harold Belasco Gold Award in 1979. Dan was a president of Sigma Nu fraternity while at Cal. Dan's father was a varsity football player for Cal and played in two Rose Bowls for the Golden Bears.

After college, Dan entered his father's real estate business, Danco Real Estate, and later took over the business.

In 1987 Dan married the love of his life and his best friend, Mariann. Their three sons brought Dan extraordinary happiness. Joseph, Daniel, Neal and Mariann will miss him dearly.

A great athlete, Dan thoroughly enjoyed skiing, golf and basketball. He was an enthusiastic coach and friend to his sons and their friends. He was always a model of great sportsmanship and passion for the game. He also had a great love for music, particularly Jimmy Buffet, Bruce Springsteen, the Beach Boys and the Rolling Stones.

Dan was a den leader with the Boy Scouts of America for many years. He was a member of the Burlingame Country Club and of the Valley Club. Dan was a faithful parishioner at both St. Catherine of Siena in Burlingame, Calif., and Our Lady of the Snows in Sun Valley, Idaho.

All who knew him will remember him for his kindness, compassion, integrity and generosity, and as a loyal and good friend.

Dan was a devoted husband, father, son, son-in-law and brother. He loved his family deeply and was always there to help any family member. He is survived by his wife, Mariann Byerwalter; his sons, Joseph, Daniel and Neal; his mother, Emma; his sisters, Ann and Patrice; and his mother-in-law, Mary, and brother-in-law, Robert.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Stanford Hospital and Clinics, 300 Pasteur Drive, Suite H3200, Stanford, CA 94305.
