13 SVSEF skiers on way to Nordic Junior finals

Final qualifiers at Bogus Basin

Thirteen Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation junior cross-country ski racers have earned berths for the 2010 USSA Cross Country Junior Nationals March 8-13 at Presque Isle, Maine.

They'll be part of the Intermountain Division squad headed off to Maine. Final announcement of the team was made Sunday, Feb. 14 in Boise.

Of that total, 11 of the SVSEF kids earned their JN slots based on the three-race Intermountain Division qualifying series that wrapped up Feb. 13-14 with freestyle and classic races at Bogus Basin Nordic Center near Boise.

They were: J1s (ages 16-17) Scott Schoen, Daniel Sundali, William Spiller, Torin Tucker, Emily Williams and Morgan Atkinson; and J2s (14-15) Zach Lindahl, Jackson Long, Sloan Storey, Maggie Williams and Maranda Stopol.

SVSEF Older Juniors (18-19) who qualified based on their results at January's U.S. Senior Nationals in Anchorage, Ak. were Erik Fagerstrom and Adele Espy (currently injured, recovering from broken ribs).

Head coach Rick Kapala brought 30 SVSEF skiers to last weekend's Bogus Basin races. There were nearly 180 racers in the field from Idaho, Wyoming, Montana and Utah. Skating was Saturday, classic Sunday.

Anong the Boise highlights, Kapala said, were:

Fagerstrom winning both days; Schoen posting the best J1 classic result Sunday; Storey skiing to a skate second place and a classic win in J2 girls; Stopol taking second in J2 girls classic for her first podium of the season; and Lindahl nailing another podium with a third place in Sunday's J2 classic.

Also, in Saturdays J3 girls' 3-kilometer skate race the up-and-coming SVSEF J3 girls squad led by Haley Montgomery placed 1-3-4-5-6. Those places in Sunday's classic won by Maddy Watts were 1-3-4-5-7.

Three weeks of training await SVSEF racers prior to their trip. The Sun Valley team will also send a team of 25 younger skiers to the Western States Ski Festival Feb. 27-28 at Whitefish, Mt. And some J2s will head to the New England J2 Championships March 4-13 at Jackson, N.H., Kapala said.
