Wood River Valley Community Awards

The Sun Valley-Ketchum Chamber & Visitors Bureau and the Hailey Chamber are seeking nominations for the 2010 Wood River Valley Community Awards. Each year, the chambers solicit nominations from the public to recognize individuals, organizations and businesses that have made significant positive contributions to the community.

Nominations are due by March 15 at 5 p.m. and fall into the following categories: Citizen of the Year, Youth Citizen of the Year, Environmental Advocate of the Year, Arts Advocate of the Year, Business of the Year, Nonprofit of the Year, and Service Individual of the Year.

Elected public officials and others who are paid for their efforts in the nominated area are not eligible. Nomination forms can be found online at www.visitsunvalley.com/communityawards, by e-mailing anna@haileyidaho.com, or by calling 788-3484.

The board of directors of each chamber reviews the nominations in each of the categories and selects the winners for the year. The awards dinner will take place April 30 at The Valley Club.

Shamrocks against dystrophy

Local businesses, including Albertsons and Atkinsons' Market, will be selling "luck for a buck" shamrocks from Feb. 15 to March 7 to support local people with muscular dystrophy. Shamrocks come in green, gold and platinum, ranging in price from $1 to $20. The money will be used to help adults and children with progressive muscle-wasting diseases by providing medical clinics, summer camps for children, support groups and research. The program is put together by the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Equine rescue meeting Tuesday

Wood River Valley-based Silent Voices Equine Rescue will host an educational meeting with the Blaine County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday, Feb. 9, to discuss the function of the legal system in regards to protecting horses from animal cruelty.

The meeting will take place at 10 a.m. at the sheriff's office in Hailey.

A press release from Silent Voices said the meeting will be "instrumental in applying the law that protects equines ... in Idaho."

Also scheduled to attend the meeting are representatives from the Idaho Department of Agriculture and the Blaine County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.
