Fish and Game awaits word on cougar

After a mountain lion was involved in a spate of confrontations with dogs last week in Bellevue, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game continues to monitor the situation.

Conservation Officer Lee Garwood said Tuesday that no further incidents have been reported since three dogs were injured between last Monday and Wednesday near Broadford Road and the Big Wood River west of Bellevue.

Garwood said the agency assumes that the same cougar is responsible for the trio of non-fatal attacks, the first of which took place on Riverside Drive and the latter two on Broadford Road.

Conservation Officer Rob Morris said an attempt to track the offending cat with a hound after the third attack was unsuccessful.

"We're still monitoring the situation and encourage people to get in touch with us if they have any contact with the mountain lion," Garwood said.

Garwood said Fish and Game wants to make sure they trap the right mountain lion, so they are not randomly tracking cats in the area.

Garwood asked that if a cougar is spotted or another incident takes place, it be reported to him at (208) 539-4403, the Fish and Game regional office in Jerome at (208) 324-4350, or the Blaine County Sheriff's Office at 788-5555.
