Infection rate below national average

St. Luke's Wood River Medical Center posted a surgical site infection rate of 0.75 percent for 2009, far below the national average of 2 percent. Out of 100 surgeries performed at St. Luke's, less than one patient got an infection.

"(This) is due to our stringent processes and standards," said hospital CEO Bruce Jensen.

Hospital offers depression screening

St. Luke's Center for Community Health in Hailey is taking appointments for free, confidential, one-hour depression screenings for Spanish speakers on Tuesday, Feb. 9.

The National Depression Screening program provides increased awareness of the signs and symptoms of depression and mental health resources in the community. The program also screens for bi-polar disorder, anxiety and posttraumatic stress. Screenings are provided by a licensed mental health counselor by appointment only from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

Dual Immersion informational meeting

The Blaine County School District will hold an informational meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 10, for parents with students enrolled in the district's Dual Immersion program.

The meeting is scheduled for 6-7:30 p.m. at the Distance Learning Lab at Wood River High School.

Agenda items include state of the program, its benefits and updates for the future.

Donations sought for troops

Blaine County Republican Women are seeking donations to add to boxes for troops deployed out of Mountain Home Air Force Base serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The group adopted five servicemen based in Idaho through anysoldier.com and sends letters, cards and care packages every month.

The group accepts both donations and financial aid to help defray shipping costs. Snacks, Chapstick, socks (male and female), slippers, iTunes gift cards, fresh coffee and shelf-stable food are all good choices. People can drop off gifts at Ascente Financial, upstairs in The Courtyard in Ketchum, 360 East Ave N., Suite 700, or call 726-3331 for further information.

The deadline to have things sent for St. Patrick's Day is March 1. The deadline to have things sent for Easter is March 22.

ERC collects tents for Haiti

The Environmental Resource Center has joined the American Alpine Club to collect tents and shelter for Haitians homeless from last month's earthquake.

Tents in good condition and of good quality should be dropped off at the ERC at 471 Washington Ave. in Ketchum by Tuesday, Feb. 9. Any shelter is welcomed, but larger, family-style tents are best.

Ball attendees to receive a gift

People who attend this year's Share Your Heart Ball at the Sun Valley Inn's Limelight Room on Saturday, Feb. 20, will receive a $50 gift certificate from the Sun Valley Auto Club. The gift certificate is a thank-you for supporting Camp Rainbow Gold.

The Share Your Heart Ball is a benefit for Camp Rainbow Gold, a weeklong camp at Cathedral Pines north of Ketchum for children diagnosed with cancer. The evening includes fine dining, silent auction, live auction and dancing. Tickets are $175 per person.

13,000 hours of volunteering

St. Luke's Wood River Medical Center reported having 175 volunteers throughout 2009. Their time contributed to the hospital totaled 13,000 hours, the same as having six full-time employees.
