Women’s film fest to feature BBC series

‘Women on the Frontline’ to screen at The Community School

Three BBC episodes, "Women on the Frontline," will be shown on Wednesday, Feb. 10, at The Community School auditorium in Sun Valley.

"Women on the Frontline" is the first in a series of events planned around the third Family of Woman Film Festival, which will take place Friday, Feb. 26, through Sunday, Feb. 28, at the nexStage Theatre in Ketchum.

The screening is free and focuses on violence against women around the world. The series will feature Nepal, Turkey and Colombia. Running time is 55 minutes.

The screening is hosted by the Advocates for Survivors of Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse and Americans for UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund.

After the screening, the Wood River Valley Interfaith Leaders Association will conduct a panel discussion led by the Rev. Ken Brannon of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Sun Valley. Other participants will include the Rev. Shawn Carty of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Hailey; the Rev. John Moreland, community spiritual leader of Light on the Mountains Spiritual Center in Ketchum; Teresa Gregory, parish life director of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church of Sun Valley; and Tricia Swartling, executive director of the Advocates. The Wood River Jewish Community is also a supporter of the event.

"The Advocates is thrilled to collaborate with Americans for UNFPA to help bring awareness of how people can help end violence against women internationally as well as locally," Swartling said.

Americans for UNFPA is dedicated to building American support for the work of the United Nations Population Fund, which provides women's health care and promotes the rights of women around the world. A screening of the Emmy-winning documentary, "A Walk to Beautiful," will be held at The Community Library in Ketchum on Wednesday, Feb. 17, at 6 p.m. In addition, Dr. Hailegiorgis Aytenfisu, chief surgeon at the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia, will speak at the library on Wednesday, Feb. 24, at 6 p.m. Aytenfisu is featured in "A Walk to Beautiful." His appearance is sponsored by the St. Luke's Wood River Foundation.
