127 young racers come out for Arkoosh Cup

Rotarun Ski Club hosted the annual Arkoosh Cup ski race Saturday, Jan. 30 and had a great showing of 127 young racers on a sunny day. Organizers thanked the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation coaching staff and volunteers.

Maddie Ferris and Hunter Diehl clocked the fastest times of the day for the eight-and-under course. This year's Arkoosh Cup trophy winners for the fastest 11-12 year-old boy and girl went to Samantha Busby (24.80 seconds) and Kyle Maxwell (24.62).

Next Rotarun race is the annual Slush Cup on Saturday, Feb. 13, for kids 12-and-under. Registration is from 8:30-10 a.m. with racing at 11 a.m. To register call Sarah at 788-1173 or email her at sarahb@rotarun.

Weisel collects two silvers in Wright GS

Second-year J3 (ages 13-14) Kipling Weisel of the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation (SVSEF) pulled off two second-place finishes in the David Wright Memorial giant slaloms staged Jan. 30-31 in Utah.

Weisel placed second 1.80 seconds and 1.29 seconds behind Park City Ski Team racer Peter Papineau Jr. in the Intermountain Division J3 qualifying races on CB's run at Park City Mountain Resort.

It turned out to be a good weekend for Sun Valley J3s, with Ben Kanellitsas earning a podium spot in third place Saturday and KJ Savaria coming back with a third Sunday.

There were 14 SVSEF racers in the field of 54 men and 46 women from Idaho, Utah and Woming. Top GS placings for the weekend were:

J3 men: 2—Kipling Weisel. 3—Ben Kanellitsas and KJ Savaria. 12—Cole Caulkins. 20—William Harder. 21—Tanner Josey. 23—Taylor Adler. 27—Lane Coulthard.

J3 women: 5—Marlow Mizer. 10—Sofia DeWolfe. 14—Jordan Fitzgerald. 26—Natalie Bunting. 27—Marcia Smith. 36—Chloe Francois.

Older skiers at Mammoth

Miles Sweek, 16, and Teagen Palmer led eight SVSEF alpine racers at the Western Region FIS Devo Speed Series Jan. 27-31 at Mammoth Mt., Ca.

Sweek's best finish was seventh place of 85 skiers in Sunday's downhill. He finished in the top 16 in all four races. Palmer cracked the top 25 in all four races among 67 women.

SVSEF men: Miles Sweek 16-SG, 15-SG, 7-DH, 10-DH; Tanner Farrow 59-SG, 61-SG, 21-DH, DNF-DH; Harlan Collins 54-SG, 59-SG, 43-DH, 46-DH; and Connor Farrow 72-SG, 69-SG, 61-DH, 65-DH.

SVSEF women: Teagen Palmer 21-SG, 24-SG, 20-DH, 23-DH; Amanda Stelling 32-SG, 33-SG, 38-DH, 25-DH; Nicole Roos 59-SG, 43-SG, 41-DH, 35-DH; and Cate Fairley 52-SG, 49-SG, 45-DH, 39-DH.

Freestylers travel, rail jammers stay home

The Sun Valley Freestyle Comp team traveled to Montana's Bridger Bowl last weekend to compete in a Northern Division mogul event.

Hannah Haupt led the girls' team both days (2nd overall Saturday/1st F1 and 1st overall Sunday by winning singles and dual moguls). Claire Siderman celebrated her 13th birthday with her best finish ever (3rd overall/1st F4 Sunday).

Joey Richardson led the boys' team with his best finish to date (3rd overall/1st M2). The men's team placed four competitors in the top 10. Parker Page had his best finish (10th overall/2nd M2). RJ Bracken was 7th overall and then 4th in the dual moguls.

Other Comp Teamers were Renee Shapiro (5th/1st F4, 7th/2nd F4), Trevor Norris (13th/5th M3, 5th/2nd M3), Zac Siele (20th/2nd M4, 16th/2nd M4) and Nathan Moses (6th/2nd M2).

"I am very impressed with our athletes results considering we have not had a course to train on due to the snow conditions. Our athletes have made the most of training and are really building momentum as the season progresses" Program Director Andy Ware said.

While the Comp Team was away at Bridger Bowl, 10 athletes from the Freestyle D team traveled to The Canyons, Utah for the first-ever Intermountain D league mogul event.

Said Ware, "We put five athletes in the top 13 letting the Intermountain Division know that Sun Valley skiers will be around for a very long time."

Braden Flaherty was the highest placing SVSEF skier (7th overall/3rd M4). Luke Rizzo, one of the youngest, finished 13th overall/1st M6.

Other Devos were Jamie Rollerson (8th/1st M5), Sean Flaherty (11th/7th M4), Wilson Dunn (12th/3rd M5), Alvaro Jiraldo (18th/4th M 5), Wyatt Minor (20th/3rd M6), Dane Flaherty (21st/11th M4), Flynn Stewart (30th/9th M5) and Eli Roberts (31st/10th M5).

The Sun Valley team hosts the four-day Sun Valley Freestyle Frenzy Feb. 4-7 on Baldy. Slopestyle is Thursday on Dollar Mountain, followed by halfpipe Friday on Warm Springs, moguls Saturday and dual moguls Sunday, both Race Arena.

USASA races in Utah

Ryan Roemer, 15, and Gavin Admire, 17, aptured first places in boardercross and giant slalom during USASA races in Utah last weekend.

511 Rail Jam

The first 511 Invitational Rail Jam was held down 21 stairs in Ketchum's 511 Building parking lot amid light snow Saturday night. Locals topping the jam session were Colter Brehmer first and Tai Barrymore third among skiers, and Chase Josey second among the snowboarders. Skier Drew Deffe also made the finals.

First-place riders received $500 cash donated by Smith, Board Bin and the Chamber. Judges were A.J. Grabos, Yancy Caldwell, Ed Sawicz and Ben Verge. Also helping out to build the course were Pat Lee, Mark Oliver and SVSEF kids.
