Hailey police reported Monday that two 16-year-old boys face burglary charges for allegedly breaking into or trying to break into 23 vehicles last week in the Woodside area of the city.

Lt. Steve England said police are still investigating, but the boys, both from Hailey, allegedly stole cash from some of the vehicles. He said the total so far recovered is less than $100.

England said police were first notified of the thefts on Monday, Jan. 18, about 6:30 a.m. when a resident of Mountain Ash Drive reported that his car door and those of several other vehicles in the area were found open that morning. England said tracks in the snow showed that 23 vehicles "had been entered or attempted to be entered."

"There was a little bit of snow and we followed their footprints," England said.

He said the prints then led to a residence on nearby Shenandoah Drive, where one of the boys lives. He said the boys were not arrested but were released instead to the custody of their parents and will be "petitioned into juvenile court on burglary charges."

England said there was no forced entry into any of the vehicles.

"All the vehicles they got into were left unlocked," he said.
