No place for Bible verse

Religious agitators have successfully radicalized young Muslims into terrorism by brainwashing them into believing Americans are conducting a new Christian crusade to wipe out their religion. President George W. Bush's remark—"this crusade, this war on terrorism is going to take awhile"—is cited as proof.

Another was Lt. Gen. William Boykin's controversial speech in which he said, "My god was bigger than his. I knew that my god was a real god and his was an idol," referring to a terrorist's worship of Allah.

Now the Pentagon is beset with a new God problem that's bound to fuel Muslim suspicions. Thousands of so-called "Jesus rifles" being used by U.S. Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan are equipped with the Advance Combat Optical Gunsight containing minute engraved references to biblical verses stamped into the metal.

For example, "JN8:12" is a reference to John 8:12: "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." And many more.

Well-meaning the Michigan gunsight manufacturer might be. But with 800,000 of the sights being made and sent to combat units, Marines have complained that if captured with "Jesus rifles" they could be dealt harsh treatment by Muslim terrorists.

The Pentagon can't claim it was caught off guard suddenly by this problem. The gunsights have contained biblical verse references for the past two generations.
