Parking trumps wide sidewalks
Change usually brings benefits, but in Ketchum that doesn't seem to apply. The council or whomever decides how wide sidewalks should be to be “pedestrian friendly” in downtown Ketchum is either out to lunch or totally inept.
Wide sidewalks do not add benefits to possible customers or retail merchants—parking is the issue. (Some merchants may benefit by using the sidewalks for retail display, i.e. “free space” but the public loses access to shopping).
The elimination of parking due to wider sidewalks from the library west down Fourth Street past Main Street and Wells Fargo is ludicrous. The situation is worsened by the addition of large, rounded sidewalk corners—for what purpose?
To add insult to injury, snow removal is now a problem on the sidewalks where before it was no issue. Why not admit a mistake was made and redo the sidewalks to restore parking? The decisions made to widen sidewalks and eliminate parking only validate the axiom that simple stupidity rules the Earth.
