More guests but fewer dollars

Sun Valley Resort says guest count is up

Sun Valley Resort filled more rooms in December than it did the previous year, and spokesman Jack Sibbach said January looks like it will follow that lead.

"But because we're selling rooms at a lower price, the yield is less," he said.

He said the resort has received a lot of attention because of its value packages combining rooms with lift tickets, but at the expense of making less money.

He said Dollar and Bald mountains reflect the same trend.

"Skier count is up," he said. "Which is great. God, we're excited about that."

But more skiers haven't translated to more money being made. Sibbach said revenue at mountain restaurants is down compared to last winter.

"They're probably like the rest of us," he said. "They're going skiing but are watching their spending."

He said many resorts share the experience of tailoring deals to dollar-guarding guests.

"We're successful one way or the other," he said.
