Carey avenges earlier loss to Pirates

Prep round ball roundup

Carey

The Carey boys collected their 10th win of the season and avenged their only loss, beating Butte County Pirates 69-51 at home Monday. When the teams previously played on Dec. 10, the Pirates prevailed 48-41 on their homecourt.

But not this time. Carey overcame a nine-point deficit, popping for six treys in a 28-point second quarter, taking a 36-24 lead into halftime.

Four Panthers finished with double digits: Trevor Peck 17, Brett Adamson 16, Dillon Simpson 12, Blair Peck 12, Jacey Baird 4, Caleb Cenarrusa 4, Joey Laidlaw 2, Brandon Dilworth 2.

Carey (10-1) travels to Bliss Saturday and entertains Dietrich Tuesday, Jan. 26.

A one point halftime advantage held up for Butte County as the Pirates tiptoed by the Lady Panthers 45-44 in Carey Monday. The Panthers (10-4) trailed 28-27 at intermission and both teams netted 17 points in the third and fourth quarters. The Panthers hoisted 66 shots from the field, converting only 16 for a 24.4 shooting percentage. Playing all 32 minutes, Jessica Parke scored 13 points. Amy Ellsworth popped for 9 points, 13 rebounds and 5 steals. Micaela Adamson and Jaide Parke tallied 8 points apiece. Candace Hennefer and Nicky Gomez with 3 each. Carey cracked the IdahoSports.com power rankings this week, moving into fifth place in the 1A Division II category. League-leading Richfield is rated #1, and Dietrich #2. The Blue Devils and Panthers play in Carey on Tuesday. Beforehand, Carey is at Bliss Saturday.

Community School

Ranked second in IdahoSports.com 1A Division II standings, the Murtaugh Red Devils bested The Community School boys 60-43 Tuesday. Dane Inman sunk three treys to lead the Cutthroats with 11 points. Paul Davis added 10, Hunter Weaver 8, Will Brokaw 6, Daniel Gomiz 6 and Henry Rickbeil 2. Sun Valley (7-4) travels to Magic Valley Christian today and Camas County on Tuesday.

Wood River

A strong defensive effort could not overcome 29 percent shooting from the field, as the Wood River girls fell to league opponent Burley, 32-30 on the road Tuesday.

"We had pretty good effort, just lack of focus putting the ball in the hole," Wolverine coach Mendy Benson said.

Tied 30-30 in the final seconds, the homecourt Bobcats sunk two free throws to avenge a 38-29 loss to the Wolverines last month.

"Burley is an improved team, and tough to play on the road," Benson said.

Tristan Bowers led Hailey's offensive effort with 11 points. KT Martinez scored 8, Cheyanne Swanson 7 and Monica Garceau 4.

Wood River (12-5) play their final Great Basin Conference West game of the regular season at home to Minico Tuesday. The Spartans won the last meeting on Dec. 22, 51-47.

Burley bested the Wood River boys 71-38 Wednesday in Hailey. Quentin Dowdle scored 11 points for Wood River. Stone Sutton sunk 8, Ollie Hoeglund 7, Juan Martinez 7, Keven Abbott 2, Jordan Doan 2 and Alex Padilla 1.

The Wolverines (2-9) are back on the Hailey hardwood tonight against Hillcrest.
